“As Gregor Samsa awoke one morning from uneasy dreams he found himself transformed in his bed into a gigantic insect.”
This is how Kafka starts his most famous story, The Metamorphosis. Actually this is his only complete work, even though he is said to be one of the most influential writeers of the 20th century!
Few days ago some friends and I went for a book discussion, and M was moderating this session. Needless to say, this is not a story to read right before or after you go for lunch 🙂
“He was lying on his hard, as it were armor-plated, back and when he lifted his head a little he could see his domelike brown belly divided into stiff arched segments on top of which the bed quilt could hardly stay in place and was about to slide off completely. “
But all in all, it is a recommended story. Elhamdlelah, it’s quite short 🙂
Finally, here are some of his interesting quotes:
“Anyone who keeps the ability to see beauty never grows old.”
“By believing passionately in something that still does not exist, we create it. The nonexistent is whatever we have not sufficiently desired.”
