Aznavour

While listening to Aznavour’s songs (and Edith Piaf’s) I can close my eyes and take a walk by the seine. He really is the last of the “Greats”.

“Que c’est triste Venice”is is one of my favourite songs for Charles Aznavour. I was surprised to find it in 4 languages: french, english, italian and spanish. I have only the french and the spanish songs, so if anyone found the english version please let me know. (BTW the complete lyrics are in the comments section)

How Sad Venice Can Be

How sad Venice can be
When you return alone
A fond memory
In every paving stone (…)

How sad Venice can be
When mandolins play
A song she sung for me
One unforgotten day

Venecia sin ti

Que profunda emoción
Recordar el ayer
Cuando todo en Venecia\n
Me hablaba de amor
Ante mi soledad
En el atardecer
Tu lejano recuerdo me viene a buscar.

Que c’est triste Venise

Que c’est triste Venise
Au temps des amours mortes
Que c’est triste Venise
Quand on ne s’aime plus

  1. The complete French lyrics:
    Que C’est Triste Venise
    Charles Aznavour
    Que c’est triste Venise
    Au temps des amours mortes
    Que c’est triste Venise
    Quand on ne s’aime plus

    On cherche encore des mots
    Mais l’ennui les emporte
    On voudrait bien pleurer
Mais on ne le peut plus

    Que c’est triste Venise
    Lorsque les barcarolles
    Ne viennent souligner
    Que des silences creux

Et que le coeur se serre
    En voyant les gondoles
    Abriter le bonheur
    Des couples amoureux

    Que c’est triste Venise
    Au temps des amours mortes
    Que c’est triste Venise
    Quand on ne s’aime plus

    Les musées, les églises
    Ouvrent en vain leurs portes
    Inutile beauté
    Devant nos yeux déçus

    Que c’est triste Venise
    Le soir sur la lagune
    Quand on cherche une main
Que l’on ne vous tend pas

    Et que l’on ironise
    Devant le clair de lune
    Pour tenter d’oublier
Ce qu’on ne se dit pas

    Adieu tout les pigeons
    Qui nous en fait escortent
    Adieu Pont des Soupir
    Adieu rêves perdus

    C’est trop triste Venise
    Au temps des amours mortes
    C’est trop triste Venise
    Quand on ne s’aime plus

  2. The complete lyrics in Italian

    Com’e Triste Venezia
    (Charles Aznavour / F. Dorin)
    Com’è triste Venezia
    Soltanto un anno dopo
    Com’è triste Venezia
    Se non si ama più
    Si cercano parole
    che nessuno dirà
    E si vorrebbe piangere
Ma ormai non si può più

    Com’è triste Venezia
    Se nella barca c’è
    Soltanto un gondoliere
    Che guarda verso te

    E non ti chiede niente
    Perché negli occhi tuoi
    E nella mente tua
    C’è soltanto lei

    Com’è triste Venezia
    Soltanto un anno dopo
    Com’è triste Venezia
    Se non si ama più

    I musei e le chiese
    Si aprono per noi
    Ma non lo sanno
Che ormai tu non ci sei

    Troppo triste Venezia
    Di sera la laguna
    Se si cerca una mano
    Che non si trova più

    Si fa dell’ironia
    Davanti a quella luna
Che un dì ti ha vista mia
    E non ti vede più

    Addio gabbiani in volo
    Che un giorno salutaste
    Due punti neri al suolo
    Addio anche da lei

    Com’è triste Venezia
    Soltanto un anno dopo
    Com’è triste Venezia
    Se non si ama più

  3. The complete lyrics in English

    How Sad Venice Can Be
    Charles Aznavour
    How sad Venice can be
    When you return alone
    A fond memory
    In every paving stone

    I walk among the birds
    That fill San Marco’s Square
    With echoes of her words
    Around me in the air

    How sad Venice can be
    When mandolins play
A song she sung for me
    One unforgotten day

    Like images of sleep
    The gondoliers go by
But when I try to weep
I find my tears are dry

    How sad Venice can be
When mist is in your eyes
    And you can hardly see
    As pigeons fill the skies

    I find the little street
    And then the old cafe
    Where we would always meet
    To dream away the day

    How sad Venice can be
    Beneath the silent moon
    That rises from the sea
    And silvers the lagoon

    I hear the vespers chime
And cross the Bridge of Sighs
I know that it is time
    To bid my last goodbye

    There’s nothing more to say
    I pass beneath the light
    And then I turn away
    From Venice in the night

    How sad Venice can be
    It’s too lonely to bear
When you have lost the love
    That you discovered there

  4. The lyrics in Spanish

    Que profunda emoción
    Recordar el ayer
    Cuando todo en Venecia
    Me hablaba de amor
    Ante mi soledad
    En el atardecer
Tu lejano recuerdo me viene a buscar.

    Que callada quietud
    Que tristeza sin fin
Que distinta Venecia si me faltas tu.

    Una góndola va
    Cobijando un amor
El que yo te entregué dime tu dónde esta.

    Qué tristeza hay en ti
    No pareces igual
    Eres otra Venecia
