In the News: some people lost sight at a laser show 17 July, 2008

At an intended-outdoor-party, some people lost their sight because due to rain the organizors put massive tents, which reflected the strong lasers (intending to illuminate upwards into the sky)!
!!!!
Oh My God!!!
How horrible is this!!!
I hope that this doesn’t happen in Egypt knowing the level of technical know-how/ maintenance / auditing,,,,

If you are staying in Cairo during this weekend (just like me), then you might be interested to know what’s going on these days:
Monday 6/8 (tonight): there is a very interesting discussion on the rise and fall of the Arab civilization at el Kotob Khan, with guest speaker Kassem Abdo Kassem. Currently I’m readnig his book about the political and social history of Mamluks. It’s an AMAZING book! Very straight forward, with references to the sources of informations, he really made history seems to be alive!
Also tonight there is a concert for Omar Khairat in el Sakiat at 9 pm (but I’m not really in the mood). And for Alex people, Eskendrella are performing in ABD EL WAHAB THEATRE at 11 pm!

Wednesday 8/8: there is a presentation “How to develop ideas & do research for picture ideas” in the CICC by Ken Grant. The presentation will cover the basics of research and developing ideas for picture stories and the building of picture stories. I think this seems interesting.
Friday 10/8: SOS music festival! And now they are going to make it in el Sa7el! I can’t imagine how crowded it is going to be! It’ll be in Zahran City Park, and I don’t know why but I don’t like this place, I thoguht they would do it somewhere by the sea,,,
Saturday 11/8: Music Matbakh Concert, 9 pm, @ British Council Garden (El Agouza): Under the banner of ‘Music Matbakh’ (Arabic for ‘kitchen’), the British Council has brought together a dozen of the most innovative young musicians from Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon, Morocco, Syria, Tunisia and the UK. Audiences will be treated to a dynamic set of new tracks, encompassing hip hop, rock, jazz, funk and electronica and featuring oud, ney, beautiful vocals and sufi rhythms.
Sunday 12/8: Harp Concert for Arabic Music by Manal Mohei Eldin @ 9 pm, El-Qal3a Festival, Sareyat El-Gabal. I think this concert will be special for the beautiful atmosphere in the Citadel, and the melodious performance of Manal Mohie ElDin. She introduced the Harp into the Egyptian music community. It’s funny how this instrument is originally ancient egyptians, while it is not that famous nowadays in Egypt!!!
Monday 13/8: El Tamye at Rawabet at 7 pm. I can’t beleive myself that I wasn’t able to attend the 2 previous concerts of this groupe (even though one of the singers is actually one of my closest friends!). I relaly hope I’d be able to make it this time.
Tuesday 14/8: Fathy Salama at el Qal3a. I am not a big fan of Fathy Salama, I just don’ like the sound of Keyboard! I feel it is too much electronic! But I know that some people really like him, that’s why he should be mentioned.
Friday 17/8: Nagham Masry at El Qal3a (at 8:30). I heard about this group for a long time, I hope I’d have the time to check them out and let you know.
Sunday 19/8: Omar Khairat (tani!) but in the Cairo Opera House, it’ll be at 7:30. I don’t think I would ever go twice in one month to a Omar Khairat concert, kefaya awy once (or max twice) per year! I confess that I like some of his music: el Bakhil we ana, el Lo`a el tani, damir abla hekmat, zai el hawa,,,, etc, but sometimes I just feel bored from his repetitive sounds…

oh my! There are so many things happening in Cairo these days. Just to give you a recap, here are the most important things:
Yesterday there was a book signing in Diwan, it was the Novel “Noun” by Sahar El Mogy. It was nice. Sahar seems to be a very sweet person…Tab3an OTV was there to record it.
On the 11th there is a concert featuring Eskenderella, Fairuz Karawya, The Trip Band, it will be in Rawabet Theater at 7 pm.
On the 13th there is a concert in el Saqiat by Waguih Aziz. I have recently heard about him, and I just LOVED his songs!
On the 14th and 15th: The Cairo Opera House will introduce us to the amazing “One thousand and one nights”. AND there will be tribute to Sheikh Imam in the Journalist Syndicate in Down Town by a group called el Tamii الطمي , it will start at 8 pm.
On the 18th there is a book signing in El Kotob Khan: Dr. Galal Amin will sign his autobiography “What did life teach me?”. There is also Flamenca in el Sakiat.
On the 19th there is a lecture in Serafis about NLP. “Neuro-linguistic programming (NLP): science or hoax?”. I have always wondered about it, some say it’s amazing, others say it’s just de7k 3al de`oun… mmm…
On the 21st: DOUBLE event. From 7:30 a concert in El Orman garden (Wust el Balad, Eftekasat, Sahara, Black Theama, The Riff Band and Screwdriver). And Suns Shine, El Dor El Awwal and Souad Massi in el Qal3a.
On the 23rd: Kotob Khan will host a Galal El Din Rumi night, as 2007 is dedicated to the celebration of him. There will also be a concert by Rasha in el geneina theater el azhar park, seems like she mixes sudanese and spanish tunes. Sounds interesting.
On the 24th: Omar Khairat in el sakia. Generally I attend Omar Khairat’s concerts in the opera, but I also love the River hall in general, so I may try this one.
On the 25th, the Jesuit will show “Bosta” !!! yuppy !!! I was sad that the movie was removed from the cinema before being able to see it. Now I have a second chance…
On the 27th: a book discussion of Noun in el Kotob Khan. Also on the 27th there is an interesting concert in el sakia, it’s a recital violin and piano by Hassan Sharara and Emad Hamdy. I was never so keen on recitals, but I attended their performance few months ago and they were BRILLIANT. Great Great music!
On the 29th, another concert by Eskendrella in el geneina theater el azhar park. I just love this band sooooo much! They sing the songs of Sayed Darwish, Ziad Rahbani and Sheikh Imam. Amazing!
This is it for now… Hasta la vista!
Omar Samra is Back !!! 29 May, 2007

I am soooooooooo happy….. Omar Samra is here in Cairo after climbing mount Everest. It’s not just because of climbing Everest in itself that I am happy, it is the feeling that he was a person (an Egyptian) who was capable of reaching his dreams. And isn’t this a great reason to celebrate?
This reminds me of my great interest in Ahmed Hassanein Pasha, and his daring journey in the western desert that he depicted in his book “The Lost Oases”. Likewise, he went to a journey that was extremely difficult, driven by the desire of reaching the unknown.
I am excited with the idea of listening to this inner voice that drives us to reach beyond the closed doors.
These examples give me hope about being able to listen carefully to this call, because life sometimes takes us away from the important things in order to fit in.
(Check out other blog responses about Omar Samra return, Ummah, Muhammed and Nomadicity.)
I will finish my post by a Poem by AHmed Shawky dedicated to Ahmed Hassanein Pasha, it was published in 1923!

Les Tambours Du Bronx 12 May, 2007

Remember “Les Tambours Du Bronx“? it was nice, the concert was filled with foreigners, mainly french tab3an, I don’t know why, anyway it didn’t feel like being in Cairo
They were banging with wood en sticks on baramil! It -surprisingly- was fun!
On another sad note, seems like fire incidents are increasing these days!! el mogama3 of el ahram in New Maadi (at the end of el nassr street) was burned to the ground, it was just a miacle that the fire wasn’t extended to the nearby houses! ya rab ostor! I don’t know exactly the reason behind the fire, but some friends who live in the same street (close to peking) told me they heard explosions as if they were in a war or something !!!

France24: Nine members of the Multinational Force and Observers (MFO) peacekeeping mission were killed when a French military plane crashed in Egypt’s northern Sinai region Sunday.
Guardian: The crash occurred in the middle of the vast Sinai Peninsula near the village of el-Thamad, about 50 miles southeast of a town called Nakhl…
Reuters: Security sources said they believed the crash was caused by mechanical problems, saying the plane crashed while trying to make an emergency landing. Foul play was not suspected.
