Blood Diamond & The Louvre 12 October, 2007
Posted by nousha in Art, Movies, Thoughts.1 comment so far
Two things moved me tonight.
I have just watched “Blood Diamond”, I heard so much about that movie but I didn’t have the heart to spend two hours at home watching a movie, but tonight I was not in the mood for reading, or TV, or hanging out. So I got the movie and stayed at home.
First of all, Di Caprio at last is doing A Movie (even though I can totally imagine Brad Pitt doing the part more than perfectly!). Even though I don’t know the rest of the cast (will have to google in a few seconds), but they were amazing. the good characters and the bad characters.
An African guy was snatched from his family by a group of rebels to extract diamond, they sell the diamond to get weapon to fight the government, meanwhile they kill anyone they consider as enemy and use children as soldiers. The guy finds a big piece of diamond and decides to hide it because that’s the only hope for him and his family. An ex-mercenary who is now in the blood diamond business gets to know about this big diamond, decides to help the guy finding his family, in order to reach it. His life depends on this diamond because he owes a colonel lots of money and this is his only hope to get out of Africa. Meanwhile he meets a journalist, who tries to report on the blood diamond business, she is fed up with the horror stories she sends to her publisher, she is now after facts, data and photos. She can only get this if the ex-mercenary helps her. During that time one of the heads of the rebels is also after the diamond, as he saw the african guy holding it, he knows his name and he kidnaps his son.
So now we have the african guy looking for his family and his son. an ex-mercenary looking for the diamond that will get him from this place. The journalist wanting to have an impact that might change this mess.
One scene I really liked when the ex-mercenary found the kid, yet the kid was scared from him and ran away. For a second it felt like the guy was struggling to save the last bit of innocence in his soul, that small part of him he hides well.
It’s a movie to remember.

I got to know that Dubai is renting the Louvre’s name for 30 years. In order to encourage the cultural scene in Dubai and the “dailogue of cultures”, there will be a branch of the Louvre in Dubai expected to be launched in 2012. It will show around 300 piece of art (the Mona Lisa will not be disturbed, don’t worry).
Dubai government will pay 525 M $ for the “license”, and the 24,000 square feet museum will cost around 109 M $.
WOW
I can’t beleive this!
I have always heard that Dubai is just a plastic wrapped city. The main entertainmnet is shopping (oops,,, and the night life). That’s why dubai is very interested in building that big building, having the biggest whatever, acquiring the fastest stuff. But now it is reaching also the art scene!!! 634 M $ are paid to have a “franchise” of the Louvre! Wow! can u imagine the things that can be done by this amount of money?? Don’t they watch One TV ads anymore??
And what about the Louvre administration? this is not a call for ‘cultural spread’, this will definitely open the door for museums auctions!
I have recently heard about the economic value of culture, and how a powerful culture can be a direct monetary national resource, even though this field is a bit problematic, but I can imagine for example how plans and projects initiated to make sure that prominent artists won’t die of starvation, then have their paintings hanged in the most famous museums as the finest pieces of art. Artists are human beings. They eat, they get married, they shop,,,, they need to have a decent living. But selling a museum like this, is plain commercial!
Also I suppose that Dubai government would have made a wiser decision to dedicate this money in discovering the talents hiding in its society. At least this way it will have a deeper impact (that’s if they were interested in the bang effect in the newspapers), but what good will it be for them in year 2042? They will either renew the contract for 1000 M $, or will just shut the place down!
What a waste of money!
What a waste of money!

I forgot to mention that during the previous weekend, me and nerro went to the Glass Art, Sculpture and Egyptian Paste museum. It was a very nice place. A fresh breeze in hectic Cairo. As nerro said, the exhibition was amazing, khosara that they didn’t take care of the dust especially in the areas of the “beautiful” jewelry. Thanks nerro for coming, I had lots of fun
Here are some photos I took, the rest is on flickr.
On another note
I heard about this book from Camel, and fortunately I found it at el kotob khan. It’s called عصر سلاطين المماليك by Kassem Abdo Kassem. I have just read few pages of it, but I wanted to share a paragraph with you. First of all, let’s check the dedication:
إلى زمن جميل مضى….. و إلى زمن أجمل يأتي
To a beautiful time that has passed …. and to a more beautiful time that’s coming
what a phrase! It describs a deep sense of love of history and a hope for a better future.
This was the first paragraph of the first page of the book. Very simple words. Not academic at all. Very easy arabic. it also gave me plausible information and drew me to know more about this crucial period of our history.
I won’t repeat the same phrase that history repeats itself, but definitely there are many lessons to be learnt from the rise and fall of the previous states, because at the end these events affected our modern lifestyle and our current political, cultural and economic thought in ways that we can not beleive, we took these things for granted without questioning from where they were originated or for what reason. Maybe now is a good time to analyze why this period we are living in has started and why did it continue…
That’s why we need to know our history, and not leave it to the school’s textbooks, because I am the only person responsible for educating myself….
…..
I miss Shania Twain’s songs. Unfortunately I don’t have her songs on MP3
… Seems like I will have to rebuild my collection.
’cause I’m keeping u forever and for always, we will be together all of our days,,, wanna wake up every morning to ur sweet face,,, always,,
If you’re not in it for life,If you’re not in it for love baby, I’m outta here!
man, I’m feeling like a woman,,, nanananananaaaa

That’s an interesting place to visit…
I heard about it from a post in Santakarim’s :: S n a p s h o t s :: and I fell in love with the work!
The museum aims at spreading knowledge and giving information on the artistic works achieved by the two artists.
The museum plays an educational role as it includes all the information necessary for specialized studies and shows practical examples of the technologies as expressed by the works on display.
The museum seeks to promote aesthetic awareness of contemporary works of art derived from the Egyptian, Islamic and Coptic heritage.

The museum setting is at the Harrania village, Sakkara Road & Maryotia canal opposite to Cataract Pyramids Resort, Giza, Cairo, Egypt.
Museum hours: 11:00 AM to 5:00 PM – daily except Sundays.

Simply BEAUTIFUL!!!

oh my! There are so many things happening in Cairo these days. Just to give you a recap, here are the most important things:
Yesterday there was a book signing in Diwan, it was the Novel “Noun” by Sahar El Mogy. It was nice. Sahar seems to be a very sweet person…Tab3an OTV was there to record it.
On the 11th there is a concert featuring Eskenderella, Fairuz Karawya, The Trip Band, it will be in Rawabet Theater at 7 pm.
On the 13th there is a concert in el Saqiat by Waguih Aziz. I have recently heard about him, and I just LOVED his songs!
On the 14th and 15th: The Cairo Opera House will introduce us to the amazing “One thousand and one nights”. AND there will be tribute to Sheikh Imam in the Journalist Syndicate in Down Town by a group called el Tamii الطمي , it will start at 8 pm.
On the 18th there is a book signing in El Kotob Khan: Dr. Galal Amin will sign his autobiography “What did life teach me?”. There is also Flamenca in el Sakiat.
On the 19th there is a lecture in Serafis about NLP. “Neuro-linguistic programming (NLP): science or hoax?”. I have always wondered about it, some say it’s amazing, others say it’s just de7k 3al de`oun… mmm…
On the 21st: DOUBLE event. From 7:30 a concert in El Orman garden (Wust el Balad, Eftekasat, Sahara, Black Theama, The Riff Band and Screwdriver). And Suns Shine, El Dor El Awwal and Souad Massi in el Qal3a.
On the 23rd: Kotob Khan will host a Galal El Din Rumi night, as 2007 is dedicated to the celebration of him. There will also be a concert by Rasha in el geneina theater el azhar park, seems like she mixes sudanese and spanish tunes. Sounds interesting.
On the 24th: Omar Khairat in el sakia. Generally I attend Omar Khairat’s concerts in the opera, but I also love the River hall in general, so I may try this one.
On the 25th, the Jesuit will show “Bosta” !!! yuppy !!! I was sad that the movie was removed from the cinema before being able to see it. Now I have a second chance…
On the 27th: a book discussion of Noun in el Kotob Khan. Also on the 27th there is an interesting concert in el sakia, it’s a recital violin and piano by Hassan Sharara and Emad Hamdy. I was never so keen on recitals, but I attended their performance few months ago and they were BRILLIANT. Great Great music!
On the 29th, another concert by Eskendrella in el geneina theater el azhar park. I just love this band sooooo much! They sing the songs of Sayed Darwish, Ziad Rahbani and Sheikh Imam. Amazing!
This is it for now… Hasta la vista!

Seems like blogging is attracting more artists
I liked Khan’s intro (Films in my vains, People in my heart and Stories in my mind)
The same goes for Ahmed Fouad Negm’s profile phrase ). Actually I am not an addicted reader of his poems like some of my friends, but this one is my favorite.
